Open Farm Sunday 2018
On Sunday 10th June hundreds of families joined Puffin Produce and Farms for City Children for Open Farm Sunday 2018 (the third annual) at Lower Treginnis Farm in St Davids! The sun was shining as record-breaking numbers of people came for the day – with over 700 people visiting Lower Treginnis Farm to find out about where their food comes from, living healthily and to enjoy a fun, free family day out!
Part of the nationally organised ‘Open Farm Sunday 2018’ event, which has been run by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) since 2006, the day allows children a fun, free opportunity to experience farm life, learn about food production and meet various farm animals. For the third year running Puffin Produce and Farms for City Children have worked together to make the day a continued success!
During the day, activities included; weighing the pigs, petting the donkeys, bottle feeding lambs, feeding the goats and milking the goats. One of the most popular attractions was the free face painting, which was arranged by Puffin Produce. Many families brought a picnic to enjoy in the sunshine, but a great selection of hot foods including Farms for City Children hot dogs, pork burgers and bacon rolls were available in addition to delicious homemade cakes – all raising money for the charity.
As part of the new ‘Healthy Living Zone’, special guests Hybu Cig Cymru entertained visitors with cooking demonstrations using Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef and welcomed school’s competition winner Oliver to the stand to cook his winning dish. The schools competition, run by Puffin Produce and Hybu Cig Cymru encouraged children to design their own healthy school lunch, with prizes including a family ticket to see the Scarlets play for the individual winner, and £200 of sporting equipment for the school. The competition saw over 200 entries from children all over Pembrokeshire, with Oliver’s winning dish of Welsh Lamb kebabs with Pembrokeshire Early Potatoes and salad sampled at Open Farm Sunday 2018.
The Scarlets Rugby were in attendance with their inflatable kicking game, encouraging children of all ages to get involved in rugby and sport. Other members of the Healthy Living Zone included the National Trust, who were encouraging visitors to take part in free ‘Wild Art’ modelling and talking about the benefits of eating locally and protecting our natural environment. The Puffin Produce ‘Blas y Tir Sustainability Station’ proved very popular, with the ‘Plastic Fantastic Skipping Challenge’ showing how supermarket carrier bags could be reused by cutting into strips and plaiting together to make a skipping rope. The skipping ropes encouraged children and adults of all ages to see whether they could do ten skips whilst also highlighting the company’s drive for sustainability and reducing landfill waste. The Blas y Tir Treasure Trail (run by Puffin Produce) also proved very popular, with lots of families taking the opportunity to go on a 1km walk around the farm and discover the coastal views, with the opportunity to pick their own Pembrokeshire Early Potatoes at the end.
Thank you to all who came and enjoyed the day – hopefully we’ll see you in 2019!
