All Wales Beach Clean!
What is the All Wales Beach Clean?
Did you know that an increasing amount of litter is ending up in our sea and posing a growing threat to seas, beaches and the coastal environment? Up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enters the world’s oceans every year… that’s the same as dumping one bin lorry of plastic per minute into the world’s oceans!
To show that Wales is ready for action, Keep Wales Tidy, along with other organisations, has launched the All Wales Beach Clean. The aim is to clean every public beach in Wales (251 identified) within two weeks from the 14th – 30th September! So far they’ve cleaned over 200 beaches! As a continuing supporter of Welsh beach cleans, taking part in local beaches cleans throughout the last 2 years, we were keen to be involved in the All Wales Beach Clean and signed up to clean Little Haven beach, Pembrokeshire.
What did we find?
In our second beach clean of 2018 we were pleased to find only a small amount of litter on Little Haven beach in comparison to Freshwater West.
The main things we found were:
– Clothing (a t-shirt and some socks)
– Fishing string/netting
– Empty food packets/wrappers
– Cigarette Butts
– Small pieces of plastic
Why is it important for Puffin Produce?
As part of our ‘Creating a Sustainable Future’ value at Puffin, we’re keen to look after our local environment, securing it’s future for generations to come. “We use our resources responsibly, are mindful of waste and our impact on the environment”.
How can you help?
As well as recycling at home and disposing of waste correctly, you can get involved in organised beach cleans. Keep Wales Tidy, the National Trust and Surfers Against Sewage hold beach cleans on a regular basis, just pop onto their websites to find out when and where your nearest one is.
