Daffodils, a Splash of Spring Sunshine

Whether it’s the solid bright yellow trumpet of a Tenby daffodil, or the two-tone Welsh daffodil or Lent Lily, our national flower is a welcome reminder that spring isn’t far away.

Since Victorian times, the daffodil has taken its place alongside the leek as a national symbol, maybe because they actually share the same name – ‘cennin’ – in Welsh. Or maybe because a daffodil smells nicer than a leek pinned to your lapel!

The daffodils Puffin supplies to stores all over Wales are grown for us by Nick and Pat Bean at Manorbier Farm in Tenby, right at the heart of the Pembrokeshire daffodil region.

Manorbier Farm is situated “in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, where we can see, hear and smell the sea…” explains their website. Small fields, mild winters, sunny days and sea breezes are ideal for growing daffs, and the Beans are kept busy juggling over 100 varieties during the main growing season that lasts well into spring.
